Harf! BBS is a telnet-only bbs featuring fine door games and fun message bases. Access to the bbs is granted quickly and
automatically, via e-mail verification.
A telnet bbs (for those who do not know) is
a server that you can access via the internet. On this server are games you can play against the other users on
the server, as well as message forums where you can hold discussions, and file areas where you can trade files.
To learn how to access this particular telnet bbs, read on.
Computer's power supply died. The BBS is down. It should be back up in a day or two when I find
time to replace the power supply.

4:30pm Central: The BBS is up and online in the new apartment. It will take a while for people trying to
telnet to harf.no-ip.com to be directed to the new IP address. Until that gets propagated, you can telnet directly
to 216.188.224.85 -- but don't "bookmark" that IP address, because my ISP uses dynamic IP addresses (meaning the
BBS is not guaranteed to be at that IP address forever).

2:15pm Central: The Internet connection at my new apartment is working properly, and I am about to head back
to the old apartment to disconnect the BBS and bring it here. I'm guessing the downtime will be less than two hours.
One thing to note -- since the harf.no-ip.com address is just a pointer to whatever dynamic IP address I've been
assigned, you probably will not be able to telnet into the BBS immediately after it comes back up. You'll have to wait
until the IP changes has propagated. I'd imagine within a few hours this should take place. I'll post another update
later on.

The BBS will be down briefly on Tue, Sep 23 because I am moving it to my new residence. I will post further
details here as appropriate.

The BBS was unavailable briefly in the evening due to ISP problemson my end. I apologize.

The bbs has been up for almost two months, and has over 350 users.
Most of the door games are played actively, and there is some activity
in the message bases. The file areas are slowly growing. Plans for
the future include getting on FidoNet, which will then allow me to
get involved in some InterBBS BRE leagues.

The bbs is open to the public. Door games will become active at 12:01am on Thursday, March 28th.
FTP Server
The bbs now has an ftp server. It gives you access to the file system via FTP. I have done next to no
configuration of it, so you'll have to explore. You log on with your user name and password, just like on the
bbs. To access it ftp to harf.no-ip.com
Reccomended Telnet Clients
Windows 9x/ME
HyperTerminal -- This is an upgrade to the default
telnet client for Windows. I have tested it extensively and it has done the best job of any client I've found
so far. Oh, it's free for personal use. I have also succeeded in both uploading and downloading files to the
file section using it, as it has zmodem built-in.
mTelnet -- I've seen this one mentioned by many people. It seems to be universally regarded as a good
client. I've made available for download beta version 7 and
beta version 8.
I've heard that some people have problems with one version and not the other, so try one and if it causes you
problems, try the other.
ZOC -- Recommended by one of my users, I've seen it mentioned by
other people as well. Sounds like a good client.
Putty -- Gaucho recommends this telnet
client. If HyperTerminal isn't doing it for you, check this one out.
AIX
Execute the following command: /usr/dt/bin/dtterm -bg black This will open a dtterm window. In this
window, execute tn harf.no-ip.com . This is the best known manner to visit the bbs via
AIX. It's not perfect, but it will do most things. If you play Kannons & Katapaults, it will garble your screen --
to recover, right click in the window, select Reset -> Soft Reset, and then type N on the keyboard. All should be
well.
IBM's Linux Affinity project has provided rxvt, which provides a color terminal for telnets. It does not
support ANSI, but it does a decent job. It does a better job in KnK and The Pit than a dtterm. To get it and
install it, visit the AIX Linux
Toolbox.
Mac
ProTerm -- I asked BBS users to recommend a good Mac telnet client, and this is what
they suggested.
Black Night -- It claims to support ANSI, but I've heard no feedback from
anyone, so I can't verify this.
DataComet -- Another one that claims to support ANSI, but that I've not had
personally verified.
ZTerm -- Same as the previous two. Claims to support ANSI,
but it hasn't been verified by anyone I've talked to.
