I'm just an animal looking for a home

RIP David Santos

I recently learned that the world is a less wonderful place with the death of my friend and former teacher, David Santos.  Only a few months ago I wrote a blog post in which my praise for his teaching featured prominently.  I knew he read it at the time, because he sent me brief comment about it.  I was just told by a friend of his that he (David) was very happy by what I had written, and so the eulogy will quote extensively from it.  It makes me glad that I happened to write that blog post earlier this year, not realizing what the none-too-distant future held.  And it serves as a reminder not to assume that you’ll always have a chance later to tell people things you’d like them to know.  I’m going to do my best to take this lesson to heart.  So if you get a message (or Facebook comment or whatever) from me with some out-of-the-blue remark, it may be because you’re important enough to me that I want to say it (whatever it is) while we’re both fortunate enough to be here.

Hello, Mitcharf. I’m David’s older sister. Thanks for this nice and beautiful article of my brother. He was an excellent profesor, always helping and motivating his students. And he was a great brother and son too.

I worked with David in Yanbu Saudi Arabia and he was a guest at my homes in Miami and Atlanta. We also vacationed together in Thailand. When I heard he had died, I couldnt believe it. He was a unique personality and a good friend. I miss him very much How and where did he die?

Hi. I was a friend of David’s. We worked together in Saudi and he stayed at my home in the US. We also vacationed together in Thailand. Is there a way I can get in touch with you?

    I just found this.

I knew David in grad school — we were in the same dorm in the 1987-1988 Academic year, and then we were roommates in 1988-1989.

We stayed in contact for a while after I left Michigan, but fell out of touch.

This evening I was wondering where he is and what he’s up to. And I found this.

It’s a strange feeling…I haven’t had any contact with David since 2010 (he sent me a brief message on Facebook), and I haven’t had any real interaction with him in over 20 years. But now I miss him, and I feel a loss knowing that I will never talk with him again. The idea that I can always look him up when I have the time… Well, that’s gone.

Can someone tell me how he passed, he was still young.

I’m late here, but my condolences on the loss of your friend. And, Lillian, on the loss of your brother.

      Thanks,
