Game #1

Date: 10/4/01
Start: 6:30pm
End: 7:25pm
Where: Krieg Field #9
Opponents: The Outfield

We were the home team (meaning we batted second).

Outcome: WIN
Final score: 11-5

Note: Going into this game the Weasels were coming off an 0-8 record in their Summer II season (their first season at the low intermediate skill level -- the fall season marks the second such season). Also, the Weasels' record against the Outfield was 1-5. On top of that, Neil and Tammy were not there for the beginning of the game, so the positions had to be shuffled immediately before the game. Despite this, the Weasels played a great game. The offense was excellent, including an in-the-park homerun by Cory and a triple by Nathan. More importantly than individual accomplishments, the Weasels scored in every inning, putting together a steady offense. In addition, the defense was superb. Brandy played incredible defense, including the 4th inning, when she recorded all three outs. The first out was a pop-up in foul territory. The second out was a weakly hit ball up the first base line. Neil fielded it and made a throw to Brandy. The throw was a bit off, and Brandy had to fall into foul territory to catch the throw. Despite the fall, she kept her foot on the bag and got the out. The third out was a pop-up between first and second base. Cory made nice plays at shortstop, including a catch of a sinking line drive near second base. The Weasels' outfield also played well, not letting a single ball get past them. Nathan set the team record for most different positions played within one game. He started the game at pitcher, moved to second base, then to left center field, and ended at third base. He played well at all positions. This impressive defense allowed the Outfield to score just 1 run in the first six innings of the game. The Outfield attempted a rally in the top of the 7th inning, and managed to score 4 runs before the Weasels shut them down. The final score of the game was Weasels 11, Outfield 5. The fine performance came at a price, however. In the 5th inning a fly ball was hit to left center field. Nathan caught it, but a runner on second base tagged up and headed for third. Nathan made a good throw to Kari, who caught the ball just ahead of the runner, and tagged him before he could touch the base. Unfortunately, he slid into Kari, driving his cleats into her knee and arm. She completed the double-play, but had to leave the game. She visited the emergency room after the game, and we're waiting to learn the extent of her injuries. She's one of the toughest players on the Weasels, as well as a great teammate, and we all hope that she recovers soon.

* - At the beginning of the game, Tammy and Neil were absent. After the first inning was played, Neil and Tammy had arrived. Neil replaced Mitch, but played pitcher. Nathan moved from pitcher to second base. In the top of the fifth inning, Tammy replaced Christine, but played second base. Nathan moved from second base to LCF. Carrie moved from LCF to catcher. During the top of the fifth, Kari was injured in a play at third base (that ended the inning). As a consequence, Christine came back into the game as catcher, but took her old spot in the batting order (which probably was not technically legal, because Tammy was supposed to have taken it). Tammy moved to Kari's spot in the batting order. The positions also changed. Christine came in as catcher, so Carrie moved back to LCF, and Nathan moved to 3B. The rest of the game was played out in that configuration.
