Game #8

Date: Jan 24, 2002
Start: 8:45pm
End: 9:30pm
Where: Krieg Field #9
Opponents: Crestview Home Repair

We were the home team (meaning we batted second).

Outcome: LOSS
Final score: 21-10*

Note: The Weasels really battled to win this game, but came up a little short. It was windy, making the pitching difficult. The opposing pitcher had the advantage of already having pitched a game, and was therefore better able to correct for the wind. Matters were made worse by the fact that the batters on Crestview Home Repair would not swing at pitches unless they were perfect, preferring to walk. The defensive stars of the game were Cory, Matt, and Neil. Cory and Matt in particular made a number of nice plays, making the right side of the infield impenetrable to the opposing hitters. This was made more impressive by the fact that Matt was playing sick. And although the Weasels made a few defensive mistakes, there were very few of the mental mistakes that had been showing up in recent games. As for offense, the Ice Weasels had trouble putting together a consistent offense, leading to low-scoring innings. There were some great examples of baserunning, however. Most notably, Newton and Nathan each made excellent slides into third base, avoiding tags. Crystal ran hard to first base to beat out a throw. All the Weasels were aggressive on the basepaths, challenging the other team to make tough throws, taking extra bases on the opponents throwing errors. In the end, however, it was not enough. The Weasels gave it a good effort, but were not able to win the game. Thanks to Monica for subbing for us, to Rob for keeping score, to Brian F for showing up to watch, and to Brandy who came to the game even though she was not in the lineup because she hurt her hand in last week's game.

  1 2 3 4 5 6   Total
Crestview Home Repair 6 6* 0 0 5 4   21*
Ice Weasels 3 2 0 1 3 1   10

* In the top of the second inning, the umpires became confused and indavertantly added the runs scored by Crestview Home Repair to the Ice Weasels' total on the scoreboard. They corrected it after the inning, but they credited them with having scored 6 runs. According to Rob who was keeping score, they had only scored 4 runs that inning. Mitch consulted with the umpires, who indicated that they had written down 6 runs. Since the discrepency wasn't noticed until after the inning (because of the confusion with the scoreboard), the Ice Weasels were unable to make a real appeal. As it turned out, the two runs would not have made a difference anyway. But it should be noted, however, that the final score of the game probably was 19-10, not 21-10.
