Game #8

Date: July 11, 2002
Start: 8:20pm
End: 9:15pm
Where: Krieg Field #5
Opponents: Special O-Limpians

We were the home team (meaning we batted second).

Outcome: WIN
Final score: 17-15

Note: A very dramatic game, from start to finish. The Weasels struggled early on, giving up 6 runs in the top of the first inning, primarily due to errors. But the Weasels battled back, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the first, and after holding the Special O-Limpians scoreless in the top of the second, the Weasels tied the game with a 2 run bottom of the second. After a few innings, there was only about 15 minutes left in the game, and the Weasels trailed 15-12. The Weasels offense produced 5 runs, giving them a 2 run lead. The umpires announced that time was up as the next inning began, and the Weasels quickly shut down the Special O-Limpians, facing only 4 of their batters. This was not a perfectly-played game by the Weasels, but they made the plays and got the hits when they needed to. There were too many highlights to completely list, because every single player contributed. Neil got an in-the-park homerun. Matt was crushing the ball all night, including a 2 RBI triple. Carrie was the only Weasel who did not reach base, but she contributed by making a nice catch of a sinking line drive, and by hitting a sacrifice ground-out that scored Matt, who turned out to be the winning run of the game. Brandy played first base excellently as always. Many thanks to Sabrina for subbing for Tammy at the very last minute, with very little notice. And she wasn't just a warm body to fill a spot in the lineup -- she worked an important walk, and caught a tough foul pop-up. Literally everyone on the Weasels contributed to this victory -- it was truly a team effort. Thanks also to Rob for keeping score. And the team had the pleausre of playing with Cory, who is taking a couple of seasons off from the Weasels. Other than some Weasel errors, the only negative part of the game was an altercation between Cory and the plate umpire. Cory took a pitch which clearly bounced on the middle of the plate, and therefore should have been a ball. The umpire called it a strike, and Cory questioned him, saying that it had hit the plate. The umpire didn't listen, and Cory turned to argue. While Cory's back was turned to the pitcher, the pitcher threw another pitch, the umpire called it a strike and rung Cory up. Even the other umpire agreed that the first pitch had hit the plate, he told Cory as he walked back to the dugout. But rather than let this incident fluster them, the Weasels redoubled their efforts and came through with a 17-15 victory against a team that had only lost one other game the entire season.
