Note: The first game of the Summer II season was among the most memorable in Ice Weasels history. It began with a bang, with the Weasels scoring 6 runs in the top of the first inning, due to a combination of good hitting, walks, and defensive errors. The Weasels bats cooled for a few innings, scoring only a single run in the third inning, before scoring 8 runs in the final two innings of the game. However, the Weasels played excellent defense, holding the Nihalators scoreless other than a 3-run third inning. Overall the game was remarkable for its defense, although there were some good offensive performances. Both Neil and Cory got in-the-park homeruns, Brandy scored from first base on a ground-ball single by Megan (involving a throwing error), and Neil exchanged his usual bloop singles for a night of scorching line drives. However, the defense was definitely the highlight of the game. Neil pitched an excellent game, and fielded his position well, catching several pop-ups well away from the pitcher's rubber, and running down a grounder up the first base line. Jerry was incredible at catcher, making several heads-up plays. In addition to handling a pop-up and almost making a play at the plate on an overthrow (Neil had backed her up and threw it quickly to the plate), she made the second out of a spectacular double play. There was a runner on second base when the batter blasted a hit up the middle. Newton fielded the ball and threw it to Cory, who was covering second base. The batter was trying for a double, and Cory collided with them while tagging them out. Seeing that Cory was flat on his back, the runner who had started on second base headed from third to home. Cory, still on his back, threw the ball toward home. Neil cut it off and tossed it to Jerry, who was covering. The runner had already reached the plate, but had failed to tag it. Jerry quickly applied the tag, completing the double-play. But that wasn't the end of the defensive excellence. Eric made an incredible diving catch in the outfield, and Brandy handled every ball hit to her and was able to make throws to first base. On the receiving end of those throws was Matt, who did an excellent job handling throws in the dirt and over his head, always managing to stretch and get the out. Carrie made a nice catch of a deep drive in right. Overall everyone played excellent defense, and the team only committed two errors during the entire game -- probably a record for the Weasels. The final score was Weasels 15, Nihalators 3. A fantastic job by the Weasels, showing what they are truly capable of. Welcome to Megan, playing her first game with the Weasels. Thanks to Pam for subbing on very short notice, and thanks to Rob for keeping score.
