Note: Although there were a few excellent defensive plays, the Ice Weasels' offense was the centerpiece of this game. On their way to scoring 18 runs, Eric hit two in-the-park home runs and Maria hit one in-the-park home run. The entire team was hitting well, and every Weasel reached base at least once. On the defense side of things, the Weasels made a nice play when a ground ball was hit to John at third base, who threw it to Maria at second base in time to force the runner out from first in a very close play. Brandy had to deal with many errant throws at first base, including one inning in which she recorded two outs by doing the splits and scooping up a throw in the dirt. Poor throws accounted for most errors by the Weasels, although there was one particularly bad play on the part of the Weasels that nobody had seen before. There was one out and a runner at second base, and the ball was hit in the air to left field. Newton caught the ball, and saw that the runner on second had run all the way to third base and apparently wasn't aware that she needed to tag up. The Stingers yelled at their runner to get back as Newton threw the ball in to Neil (who was cutting him off in shallow left field). Laurie was standing on second base, and Brandy was behind her on the first base side, to back up the play. Neil appeared to be unaware that the runner needed to get back to second base, so he tossed the ball to Brandy, who wasn't on the bag. Meanwhile the runner got back to second base, but overran it. Fortunately Brandy took matters into her own hands and ended the agonizing play by tagging the runner out while she was still off the base. All in all it was an impressive offensive performance by the Ice Weasels, and a good defensive effort marred by some bad throws and one mystifying play. It was more than enough to win, however -- way to go Weasels! Thanks to Maria and Christine for subbing, and thanks to Rob for taking pictures.
