Note: This was a topsy-turvy game, featuring not one but two Weasels come-from-behind rallies. Thanks to some errors by the Weasels and some good hitting by the Nihalators, they leapt to an early 11-4 lead. The Weasels battled back, and eventually took the lead. Later, the Nihalators re-took the lead and the score was 16-14. Again the Weasels battled back, tying the score at 16 as time expired. The game went into extra innings, which are played with the 1-pitch rule in effect. Neither team scored during the first extra inning, but the Nihalators managed to score 3 runs in the second extra inning. The Weasels managed to score a single run in response, dropping the game 19-17 after 8 hard-fought innings. Eric pitched a great game, hit well, and made a great play at third base to tag out a runner going for a triple. He also scored the Weasels 16th run (tying the game, allowing it to go into extra innings) by making a mad dash from third base to home, even though the cut-off throw had already arrived at the second baseman. The throw was bad, and he scored standing up. Throughout the game the Weasels alternated between making clutch hits/plays and struggling offensively/defensively. Some of the highlights included an in-the-park homer by John, which featured a close play at the plate. Just as he was approaching home, the relay throw came in to the pitcher who was covering. She applied a tag to him as he ran by, but he dislodged the ball from her glove, thus scoring safely. Brandy played her usual excellent defense at first base, blocking more than one errant throw from getting away from her. Brandy also hit the ball well, getting on base more than once with solid hits to left field. The Weasels will try to close out the season with a win on Saturday, which would grant them first place in the league. Thanks to Azzy and Susan for subbing. Thanks to Nyssa for coming out and playing for part of the game so she could qualify to play in the tournament with us next weekend.
