Game #1

Date: May 8, 2003
Start: 6:30pm
End: 7:25pm
Where: Havins Field #1
Opponents: Bat Now - Beer Later

We were the home team.

Outcome: WIN
Final score: 12-10

Note: The game started out well, with the Weasels holding their opponents scoreless for the top of the first inning, and scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning (thanks in part to Laurie working a walk, followed by a 2-run in-the-park home run by Eric). Within a few innings, however, the opponents had battled back, and the score was tied at 6. Bat Now - Beer Later erupted for 4 runs, bringing the game to 10-6 with 7 minutes left to play in the game. Laurie got on base, and scored when Eric doubled. Tammy hit a high pop-up in shallow left field. It looked like the outfielder had it, but he missed the catch. Tammy was safe on first, and Eric managed to advance to third just ahead of the throw. Matt came up big by managing a walk, scoring Eric and moving Tammy to third. Carrie took the automatic walk after him to load the bases. Neil doubled, clearing the bases and scoring Tammy, Matt (the tying run), and Carrie (the go-ahead run). By this time, there were under 3 minutes left on the clock, and the Weasels had the lead. They knew that if they could continue batting until time ran out, they would win the game since they were the home team. Christine got a good pitch to hit and singled -- Neil ran home on the hit and scored, and Christine advanced to second base on the throw to the plate. John came to the plate and took his first pitch, which was called a strike. He fouled off the next two pitches, and was called out on strikes. Susan got out after taking her first pitch. Mitch came to the plate with two outs, Christine on second base, and about 1 minute left in the game. The pitcher knew that time was running out, and he was throwing his pitches in quickly. The first two pitches were balls, and the third pitch was a strike. With less than 20 second left on the clock, the fourth pitched looked like it was going to be a strike. Mitch used his trademark home run swing and blasted the ball to about six inches in front of home plate. He managed to beat the catcher's throw to first base, and Meredith stepped to the plate just as time expired. The game was over and the Weasels were declared the winners. Eric pitched an incredible game, he was the offensive force we've come to expect, and he fielded his position well. Laurie played quite well at second base, stopping some hard hit balls, and also managing to range far to her left to make a nice play on a tough ground ball. Unfortunately John had also moved to go for it, and nobody was covering first in time to record the out. Neil had a good game at shortstop, not letting much get by him, and making very hard and accurate throws to first base. The outfield had relatively little action in the game, with only a few fly balls caught by the Weasels throughout the entire game (by Newton and by Carrie). Susan, Mitch, Meredith, and Newton struggled at the plate a bit in this game, but the rest of the lineup was fairly solid. Matt in particular worked two walks (with Carrie taking automatic walks behind him), and ended up scoring (along with Carrie) both times. The Weasels made some throwing mistakes during this game, and there were a couple fielding lapses, but they performed when it counted and came out with a 12-10 win. Thanks a lot to Tammy, Christine, and Meredith for subbing.
