Game #2

Date: October 7, 2010
Start: 9:15pm
End: 10:10pm
Where: Havins Field #3
Opponents: Marauders

We were the home team.

Outcome: LOSS
Final score: 20-9

Notes: The Weasels lost this game because the Marauders out-hit them, which was compounded by an unusually shaky pitching performance from Neil. Most galling, however, was the fact that the umpires denied the Weasels a chance to mount a comeback, through a combination of ignorance of the rules and a desire to end the game quickly. Specifically, in the top of the 5th inning, the bases were loaded by the Marauders and a male batter drew a walk. The runner from second base skipped third base, and went home. The Weasels appealed at third, and the umpires claimed that the runner was not out because he did not need to touch the bag in this circumstance. That is incorrect, but the umpires were steadfast in insisting that it was. Because of this, the inning was prolonged, leading both to more runs being scored and less time being left in the game when the Weasels came up to bat. In the bottom of the 5th inning, the umpires took advantage of the fact that the scoreboard was not working to subtract some time from the game (evidenced by the fact that the game on a neighboring field started before our game and had a working clock). In addition, they called Newton out on a force at second base to end the game, when he was clearly safe. The terrible umpiring was not the reason the Weasels lost -- credit should go to the Marauders' excellent hitting -- but they did give the Marauders runs they should not have (due to the incorrect rule knowledge) and they prevented the Weasels from playing another inning, and thus another opportunity to stage a comeback. There were two defensive highlights by the Weasels, however. The first came in the top of the first inning, with runners on first and second base with one out. The batter hit a line drive to Shawn in right-center field. He caught it for the first out, and made a strong throw to a stretching Matt at second base just in time to double off the runner. The other defensive highlight came in the top of the 4th inning. With one out, the batter hit a line drive into right field. It looked like a certain double, but a great throw by Stephanie and an incredible sweep tag by Matt got him just before he made it to second base. Thanks a lot to Stephanie, Kelly, Teri, and Carrie M for subbing. Thanks to our fans for coming out to cheer, including Becky and Ted. Thanks to Amanda for coming out to support the team even though she couldn't play due to a hurt back (nothing serious!). Great thanks to David and Justin for keeping score!
