Ice Weasels: Spring '12 Season, Game #5

Final score: 17-8

Notes: A very exciting game! The first 4 innings were low scoring and back and forth -- going into the top of the 5th inning, the score was tied 3-3. In the top of the 5th inning the Weasels scored 4 runs, but the Orange Sox answered with 5 of their own in the bottom of the 5th, leaving the Weasels trailing by a run. The Weasels failed to score in the top of the 6th inning, and going into the bottom of the 6th inning they had around 4 minutes left on the clock. If the Orange Sox batted for that long, the game would be over, and the Orange Sox would come away with a 1-run victory. The first batter for the Orange Sox that inning was the last batter in their lineup. She had grounded back to Neil at pitcher in both of her previous at bats, and had given no indication that she had any power. Accordingly, Tim was playing rather shallow in left field, and was taken by surprise when she hit a fly ball over his head. He immediately turned and ran directly backwards, managing to catch up to the ball. But although he got a glove on it, it bounced off his glove, and he began tumbling to the ground. Somehow he was able to grab the ball as he fell, and although he ended up doing a somersault, he kept control of the ball and completed the spectacular catch. The next batter for the Orange Sox was Archie (who was subbing for them). He managed to work the count full and hit a foul ball, but then he hit another foul ball for an out (in this league you get 1 foul ball after you have two strikes -- after that a foul ball is an out). The third batter, Sarah, also worked a full count, but then flew out to Newton in right-center field for the third out of the inning. There was one minute left on the clock, so the Weasels earned their chance to bat in the top of the 7th inning. The Weasels did not squander their chance. The top of the 7th proceeded as follows:

Neil singles.
Becky singles, advancing Neil to 2B.
Mitch singles, scoring Neil, advancing Becky to 2B. Score is now tied 8-8.
Lacey singles, scoring Becky, advancing Mitch to 2B. Weasels now lead 9-8.
Newton doubles, scoring Mitch, advancing Lacey to 3B. Weasels now lead 10-8.
Amanda singles, scoring Lacey and Newton. Amanda advances to second base on an errant throw home attempting (and failing) to get Newton out at the plate. Weasels now lead 12-8.
Matt singles, scoring Amanda. Weasels now lead 13-8.
Lindsay doubles, scoring Matt. Weasels now lead 14-8.
Tim doubles, scoring Lindsay. Weasels now lead 15-8.
Azzy triples, scoring Tim. Weasels now lead 16-8.
Chris singles. Azzy holds on third until the throw to first base (attempting and failing to get the out there) gets past the first baseman, at which point Azzy scores. Weasels now lead 17-8.
Zook, Neil, and Becky get out. The Weasels go into the bottom of the 7th inning with a 17-8 lead.

With Chris pitching the bottom of the 7th, the Orange Sox only sent 4 batters to the plate, scoring no runs, and completing the Weasels' 17-8 victory. It was very much a team effort, with every Weasel scoring a run, 11 of the 12 Weasels driving in a run, and every Weasel reaching base safely at least once. Way to go, Weasels!
