Notes: An offensive romp for the Weasels after last week's debacle. The offensive leaders for the Weasels were Chris (2 singles and 1 triple in 3 plate appearances), Neil (2 singles and 1 walk in 3 plate appearances), Becky (3 singles in 3 plate appearances), and Mitch (2 singles and 1 walk in 3 plate appearances). In the bottom of the second inning, Chris hit a 2-run triple, and then advanced home himself when the throw in from the outfield missed the cutoff and rolled away. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Newton hit a 1-run triple.
While there was no single outstanding defensive play by the Weasels, the game featued some solid defense as well. Tim tracked down some tough fly balls in left field, Neil made some nice plays at 3B, Natasha caught a tricky popup in front of the plate, and Chris hustled to catch a popup halfway up the third base line. The most dramatic defensive plays happened in the top of the 5th inning. The inning started with a ground ball single up the middle, and then the drama began. The next batter hit a ground ball to Jason at shortstop, who threw the ball to Natasha at second base, forcing out the runner by a good distance. Despite this, as Natasha was pushing off the bag to consider turning two, the runner (seemingly deliberately, according to all observers) slid into her legs and took her out. Fortunately she was unhurt, and managed to control her anger as the guy walked off the field without apology. In retrospect, it is surprising he was not ejected by the umpires for choosing to slide into a fielder after he had already been forced out.
The next batter singled, leaving runners on first and second base with one out. The following batter hit a ball that ticked off Jason's glove and got through to the outfield. Tim was backing him up, and threw the ball to Natasha at second base. The sliding runner had arrived just before the ball, and the umpire called him safe. But Natasha alertly applied and held a tag on him. He momentarily came off the base during his slide, and was called out for the second out. At this point the Austinites' dugout erupted in anger, and some of them walked onto the field yelling at the umpire. After a few tense moments, the umpires defused the situation, and play resumed with runners on first and third base, and two outs.
The subsequent batter hit a line drive into left-center field. The runner from third base scored easily as Lindsey fielded the ball and relayed it to Jason, who had come out to take the cutoff throw. The runner from first base had rounded second and decided to try for third. Jason's throw to Neil beat her easily, and she was tagged out on arrival to end the game.
