Date: January 29, 2015
Start: 7:15pm
End: 8:0pm
Where: Krieg 11
Opponents: Slow Moving Vehicles
We were the home team.
Outcome: LOSS
Final score: 26-11*
Notes: This was the replay of a protested game originally scheduled for 6:30pm on January 15 on Krieg 8. The statement of protest is included later on this page. The protest was upheld, but rather than replay the game from the point of protest, they just replayed it entirely. This was a better situation for the Ice Weasels (since the Slow Moving Vehicles were in the lead at the time of the protest), so we did not argue. The scoring on this page reflects the scoring of the replayed game. Thanks to Kristin for subbing in the original protested (and therefore statistically-nullified) game. Thanks to Nick for subbing in the replayed game. Great thanks to Mitch and Zook for keeping score.

* - The first homerun hit by the Slow Moving Vehicles in the top of the 5th inning was a 2-run homerun, but the umpires mistakenly only gave them 1 run for it. Accordingly, the official scoring for the game was 26-11, but the correct score was 27-11. Except for the official score listed at the top of the page, this page reflects the actual scoring of the game.
Statement of protest to the league:
The game was on Thursday, January 15th, on Krieg Field 8 at 6:30pm. There was only one umpire officiating the game.
The protest happened in the top of the 1st inning. My team, the Ice Weasels, were in the field. The home team, the Slow Moving Vehicles, were batting. Their 7th batter (of a lineup of 10) was up to bat. There were 2 outs. The bases were loaded, and the score was 1-0 (in favor of the Slow Moving Vehicles).
Their 7th batter drew a walk and advanced to second base. The runner from second base cut across the middle of the diamond to get to home plate, never coming close to touching third base. After all of the runners had finished their running, but before another pitch had been delivered, I appealed to the umpire that the runner had failed to touch third bse.
The umpire stated that he didn't know what the rule was for that, and so he couldn't rule the batter out. I told him in that case, I was going to play the game under protest. I made sure that he informed the other manager of this, and that he took note of the game situation.
I have corresponded with the league office about this exact same rule on multiple occasions. On all occasions, both the league office and the umpire association agreed that the runner is obligated to touch third base on their way to home. IIn Austin city league, the rules supplement allows male batters to skip first base on the way to second base when they draw a walk in co-rec. I have examined the latest ASA rulebook, as well as the latest copy of the local rules supplement, and I can find no evidence that there has been a change to these rules.
After the game, I confirmed with the umpire that we had the same record of the game situation. He also told me that he had called his supervisor, and had been told that the runner should have been called out for missing the base after I appealed it.
I should mention that the umpire was very polite throughout all of this, and never got defensive or angry.
If the decision is overturned, then when the game is resumed, the 7th batter (a male) of the Slow Moving Vehicles would have been the last batter of the top of the 1st inning (since it was on his 2 base walk that the out happened). Their first batter in the top of the 2nd would be their 8th batter (a female). The game would resume at the beginning of the bottom of the first inning, with a score of 1-0, and the top of the Ice Weasels lineup coming up to bat.
So, those are the facts of the protest. This misapplication of the rules clearly hurt our chances of winning, since it deprived us of an out and directly led to 2 additional runs scoring (which were driven in by the walk). The protest rule is clear tht we need only show that the misapplication of the rules hurt our chances of winning -- not that it necessarily caused us to lose.
