Final score: 10-4
Note: This was the Ice Weasels first game in the Low Intermediate league. Having won the Spring 2001 season, the Weasels had to move up from Low Novice. The innings went quickly in this game, with both teams playing excellent defense. The Snake Charmers slowly scored runs, while the Weasels were held scoreless for most of the game. In the late innings, the Weasels managed to tack on a few runs. The final score was 10-4, Snake Charmers victory. However, as the score reflects, the Weasels were not outclassed. The Weasels did not have an effective offense for the most part, although Matt did hit an in-the-park homerun (Cory represented two of the other three runs, and Pete represented the other one). The Ice Weasels had an excellent defense and made a number of great plays. The infield in particular was phenomenal, including two double plays. The first double play started with a hard-hit ground ball to Kari at third. She threw it to Cory at second for the out, and Cory threw it to Brandy at first. The throw was off, and hit the ground before it reached Brandy. She was able to scoop it up and get control of it just before the runner got to first, completing the double play. The other double play came when Cory made a nice running catch of a fly ball to shallow right-center field. He immediately threw the ball to Brandy at first, to double up the runner who didn't have time to make it back to first base. Pete pitched a great game, Carrie made a few nice plays in the outfield, but it was definitely the infield's defensive skills that were the most impressive. Kari was virtually flawless in her play at third base, snaring hard-hit line drives, cleanly fielding tough grounders, and making good throws to the other bases. Matt played well at shortstop, allowing almost no balls to get past him. As has already been mentioned, Cory and Brandy took part in a number of key plays for the Weasels. All in all, the Weasels played a good game, and it's clear that the Low Intermediate league will be a challenge, but not an insurmountable one.
